The approval stack
Maine cannot host orbital launch without clearing a federal-and-state approval stack. We track every layer — what exists, what's pending, and what hasn't been filed.
Maine Space Corporation enabling statute
Chartered as quasi-public (2022); converted to nonprofit in 2025. Develops the Maine Space Complex.
Launch-site operator license (FAA AST)
Required before any orbital launch operations; no application on file as of last review.
Environmental review (NEPA)
An environmental assessment or impact statement will gate any federally licensed launch site.
Airspace & maritime coordination
Range safety over the North Atlantic requires FAA and Coast Guard coordination on each operation.
State & municipal siting approvals
Local zoning, host-community agreements, and land control at the chosen site.
Sea-based launch platforms
MSC has been actively exploring offshore launch platforms since August 2025 as an alternative to land-based site development.
Sourcing — regulatory items track to FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation (AST) records, NEPA documents, and Maine Space Corporation governance filings. Status reflects last review; no launch-site operator license is on file at the time of writing.
